Cold Storage Monitoring Using Matter Protocol
A mid-sized food distribution company required a smart, cost-effective solution to monitor temperature and humidity levels across multiple cold storage facilities to ensure the quality and safety of perishable products like dairy, meats, and produce.

Challenge
The client faced several issues with their legacy cold storage monitoring systems:
- Lack of real-time visibility into temperature/humidity variations.
- Manual data logging, which increased human error and reduced response time.
- Incompatibility between devices and cloud platforms, resulting in fragmented monitoring.
- No mobile-friendly interface for remote access and alerts. High cost and complexity in scaling the system to additional storage rooms.
Solution
We proposed a modern, interoperable IoT solution built using microcontrollers integrated with the Matter protocol—a new standard for smart home and IoT interoperability.
The solution included:
- Microcontroller with temperature and humidity sensors (e.g., DHT22 or SHT31 /41 ) installed in each cold storage unit.
- Matter protocol integration via ESP-IDF SDK and ESP-Matter, allowing devices to securely communicate over Thread or Wi-Fi.
- Data from sensors pushed in real-time to compatible apps via Matter.
- Integration with Apple Home, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings, enabling cross-platform access.
- Custom alert configurations for temperature or humidity thresholds.
- Dashboard access via mobile apps and web, supporting both Android and iOS.

Result
The deployment resulted in significant operational improvements:
- 95% reduction in manual data logging tasks.
- 40% faster response time to abnormal temperature changes.
- Improved regulatory compliance with automated data logging and export.
- Cross-platform accessibility meant staff could use their own devices with preferred apps.
- System easily scaled to 12 additional cold storage units within weeks.
Technology Stack
Conclusion
By leveraging the Matter protocol and the powerful ESP32 microcontroller, we developed a scalable, secure, and user-friendly cold storage monitoring solution. This system empowered the client with real-time insights and proactive alerts—without the high cost or rigidity of traditional systems.
This case study exemplifies how open standards like Matter, when paired with low-cost hardware like ESP32, can revolutionize industrial and commercial IoT monitoring applications.

What our clients are saying about us?
DigitalMonk was great to work with, a true pro, and very honest/ethical in their approach. I trust them and would call on them again for other projects. They took my very bare-bones ideas and turned them into a working device. I would definitely recommend them and work with them again in the future."
