The challenge was accurate athletic event detection โ€” sprint starts, jump takeoffs, landings โ€” from a wearable that fits on the wrist and survives a full training session on a coin cell. Continuous sensing drains most devices before halftime.

  • Event-driven firmware โ€” MCU sleeps until IMU interrupt fires, no polling loops
  • Context-aware sleep: deep low-power state when athlete is resting, instant wake on motion
  • Threshold-tuned IMU filtering to eliminate false triggers from vibration and handling
  • BLE transmission in tight, batched windows to minimise radio-on time
  • Compact PCB with RF keep-out zones for stable BLE performance on-body
